Apologies for yet another belated blog! These drawings of the spine have taken quite a chunk of time, but I hope they pay off in the long run (and that YOU like them). I’m hoping that these drawings can shed a little light on what you might be feeling when part of your neck or back gets a bit cranky.
I’ve got a plan for the return of Mr. Blue later this week, so stay tuned!
The Musculature of the Spine
Over the last few weeks, I’m made some drawings based on the musculature of the spine.
The first drawing highlights the neck and voice.
The second highlights the breadth of the spinal support.
And finally, the latest and greatest view highlights the depth of the spinal muscles.
CHECK IT OUT!!!!
When we walk around or sit with an arch in the back, these muscles around the lower back will get quite tight as they are the dudes that help us make a back bend. You can imagine these muscles around the lower back running from the base of the spine/top of the pelvis up to the sides of the vertebrae. When these spinal muscles contract around the lower back, they will shorten the distance between the pelvis and the various vertebrae.
It’s worth repeating that when a muscle contracts, it will get shorter and tighter.
If you’re doing something like standing upright, it’s really quite the energy drain to constantly hold the lower back in an arch while trying to type or walk around. Learning to NOT arch the back is a topic for another post. For today, you can just use these images to help you see what muscle and bone mechanisms are involved in allowing the spine to lengthen.

It's worth an examination of the many muscles attaching along the back at various points AND imagining their contraction to arch the back!! I can imagine these muscles in a permanently contracted state (for me)!! I will think about these guys more!!
