Belated Greetings!
Normally I try to get these posts into your inbox quite promptly on Thursday mornings. Unfortunately, my schedule has been shifting and I’m finding my free time to blog later in the week. Hopefully a little Friday morning drop of drawings will help ease the delay!
The Layers of the Neck
Before my India trip, I went on the bat sh*t crazy quest to make fun anatomical drawings of the head, neck, and upper back. The purpose is not to force you to memorize all the muscles in the neck. That type of thinking isn’t really required to get the Alexander Technique flowing.
Instead, these drawings are designed to spark your imagination. I want you to have an idea of just how marvelously layered you are. I want you to know that your “weight lifting muscles” are simply big parts of a much bigger whole.
I want you to stop and wonder!
So without further ado, let’s check out some pictures!
The Top Layer of the Neck Muscles
The Second Layer of the Neck
The Third Layer
The Deepest Layer
My Takeaway
All of these small little spindly muscles. I love seeing them. They run very deep within the neck and they all should feel extremely soft and pliable. All. The. Time.
If you’re helicopter is beginning to take off, you should feel these spindly cables soften and expand into a bit of length. If you shove your head up, you will feel these cables clamp down. Of course, there’s more to you than just a head and a neck, but it is worth taking the time to wonder if you feel the depth of this neck.

Really interesting how the muscles go high high up around head, face, different layers. Will explore if thinking constructively up there will be parr of forward and up release.
